As this was the first event I’ve shot in 2018 I got double emotions. One dose for the beginning of the season and another for the first event shot in this One Lens project I’ve started in 2018.
Event photography is my main activity and even after 15 years in this business I’m still nervous at the beginning of the day when I start shooting. It takes me less than 20-30 clicks and I’m on full steam afterwards.
Before the event, the father, which is in a related business and knew me already as a Sony Image Ambassador, he also a photographer, asked me this question:
So are you going to shoot my daughter’s baptism with one lens only?
Holly mama, he knew about my project already and this sky-rocketed my emotions and lack of confidence.
But with no plan to use them. And I haven’t!
When I got to their home, both parents were so chill and calm, and this got me back on track. What added to this was the mother telling me I’m allowed to be in the same room when she was breastfeeding the baby.
Wow moment for me. It was the first time in 15 years when this happened. As a male photographer is not so common in our country’s culture to be there in such sacred moments. I didn’t want to be rude though, and tried to be as unintrusive as possible. The A9 in it’s complete silence was an added bonus.
Afterwards everything went smooth as silk. I barely noticed I’m on the 35mm focal length during the entire event. I felt at home with it.
As I already predicted, big photo groups might be a challenge in the future if space is limited and there is no room for me to step back. But then, I’ll let the guests know it’s better even for them to be in small groups with the baby of grooms (in case of a wedding) so problem solved.
I’m so looking forward into new challenges and I’m sure it’s going to be a crazy beautiful 2018. Can’t wait to tell my stories on how this goes.
On a side note, if you’re a prospecting client and looking into this, don’t get scared you’ll only get black and white photos from me. It’s only for this site’s look and feel that I keep posting black and whites.
Proof to that is this small slideshow I gave to the parents as a surprise, along with their photos.
